In “Pork and
Beans,” Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo sings for individuality
in the face of the media spotlight. Motion Theory director Mathew
Cullen expands on that theme in the video for the song, bringing together
dozens of YouTube celebrities, intentional and otherwise, to sing
along with Weezer. It’s the ultimate web viral mash-up, cross-pollinating
the song, web personalities, and cultural memes – not just as
a mindless parade of YouTube faces, but as a celebration of bold creativity.
Motion Theory brought together some of the most well-known web personalities,
including the Evolution of Dance, Chris Crocker, Numa Numa, Tay “Chocolate
Rain” Zonday, Miss Teen South Carolina, Diet Coke Mentos, Afro
Ninja, and many more. The video garnered an incredible 1.2 million
views in 24 hours on its way to becoming the #1 YouTube video worldwide
for its first month of release. By the end of 2008 the video had been
viewed over 16 million times.
Jeff Consiglio and Motion Theory editor Colin Woods collaborated to
bring Pork and Beans to life in the edit room, and received the 2009
GRAMMY Award for BEST SHORT FORM MUSIC VIDEO, a Nomination for the
2008 MTV Music Video Award for BEST MUSIC VIDEO EDITING and a Nomination
for VIDEO OF THE YEAR at the 2008 UK Music Video Awards.
